Chapter Eight

The swishing of a curtain being dragged across its rail woke Hannah from a peaceful slumber. She opened one eye and saw a strange figure standing by the bed. Pulling the sheet up around her, she sat up to be greeted by the smiling face of a woman who was probably in her mid-sixties. Her greying hair was swept back into a severe bun but her plump, ruddy cheeks softened the harsh effect of it. She had a pretty floral dress on and, over it, a patterned apron that created a violent clash of colors. On her feet, she wore black shoes made for comfort not fashion. Hannah surmised that this was the housekeeper Dougie had mentioned last night.

“I’m Mairi,” the woman introduced herself, confirming that Hannah was right about who she was. “Cameron asked me to come and see if you were alright.”

“I’m fine,” Hannah replied. She blinked a few times. It was incredibly bright in here. “What time is it?”

“It’s gone twelve,” Mairi told her. “You’re quite the deep sleeper. You didn’t stir when Cameron came to rouse you for breakfast, so he thought he’d leave you a while.”

Cameron was turning out to be a lot more considerate than she’d given him credit for. Hannah knew that he’d started out viewing her as the enemy but wondered if his opinion had changed somewhere along the line. She couldn’t believe though, that she’d slept so long or that he’d been in the room without her knowing he was there. It was unlike her to sleep so soundly but yesterday had been exceptional and had clearly taken a lot out of her.

“I should get up then,” she told the other woman. “I’m Hannah, by the way.”

“Aye, Cameron said that was your name.”

“Is that all he said about me?”

She wanted to know if he’d been candid with the other woman about the reasons for her being here. It seemed unlikely but if he wanted to humiliate her, telling people that she was there to be punished for her mistakes was one way to do it.

“Aye, but wee Dougie was a bit more forthcoming.”

Stifling her amusement at this petite woman calling Cameron’s strapping brother wee, Hannah tried to think what Dougie might have said about her. Something on her face must have betrayed her concern, because Mairi reached over and patted the back of her hand reassuringly.

“He just said you were Cameron’s girlfriend and I was to make sure he looks after you properly while you’re here. Between you and me, I think the lad took a bit of a fancy to you.”

Had he? Hannah pursed her lips and considered whether she could ever return his interest. No, probably not. Underneath that joviality something darker had to be lurking. Nobody was that cheerful without it masking some deep secret. Besides, Dougie was into sharing women and dealing with two men at a time wasn’t her thing. At least she didn’t think it was. Without trying it, could she really be sure?
